Technical Support Specialist

JOB TITLE:  Technical Support Specialist                                                                                               

DEPARTMENT: Engineering

EXEMPT STATUS:  Exempt

REPORTS TO:  Chief Engineer

  1. I.  JOB SUMMARY: The Technical Support Specialist is responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure.  This individual ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related products remain in operational condition.

Regular duties:   The Technical Support Specialist is primarily responsible for the installation and updating of broadcast/IT networks, and office computers.  The Technical Support Specialist must possess an understanding of technical production processes and workflow to better assist with daily activities.     

Duties are assigned but not limited to:

  • Install, operate, and maintain broadcast/computer equipment and networks
  • Troubleshoot, perform hardware and software maintenance and installs all production and broadcast related equipment
  • Maintains quality control of recorded materials and takes responsibility to discern the issue to correct it
  • Performs all broadcast related job functions required by the FCC and maintains broadcast signals within FCC guidelines
  • Provides set up and operation support of video and audio for live remote broadcasts
  • Attends training sessions relevant to the job functions at the station
  • Implement technical infrastructure and provide systems integration for present needs and provides on-going research and vision for future needs
  • Installs and maintains office computer and networking equipment.  Provides updates and repairs as required
  • Manages and maintains station IT network and server platforms
  • Manages business continuity and data recovery procedures and operations
  • Upholds the integrity of the station’s digital facilities and contents, including e-mail services, firewalls, and FTP servers
  • Makes recommendations for future upgrades
  • Other duties as assigned

Occasional duties:

  • Operates technical equipment as needed
  • Assists with local productions as needed (e.g. Audio mixer, technical director, robotic camera operator, teleprompter, and graphics


II.  QUALIFICATIONS:
This position requires a minimum of five years experience in public TV or radio membership, or five years related experience with a comparable organization.  Bachelor’s degree in engineering, IT or related field.       

Knowledge and Competencies: 

  • Strong PC and MAC computer skills, including Windows XP/Vista, Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro, and related software
  • Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Microsoft Word , Excel
  • Ability to handle complex tasks in a time sensitive environment
  • Ability to learn and apply FCC rules and regulations
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Must have the ability and flexibility to travel to ancillary studio and other locations as required
  • Must be willing to work a varied, flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends
  • Must possess excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and timelines as required
  • Must be detail oriented and able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while shifting priorities as Willingness to learn new specialized software tailored to specific broadcast applications required

III.  PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Physical requirements are related primarily to the essential functions of any job.  In order to perform the essential functions of this position, you must be able to sit, walk, stand, use your hands, reach, speak, and hear. You must be able to lift or exert energy up to 50 pounds 25% of the time.  Close and distance vision (20 feet or more) and the ability to observe an area that can be seen to move up and down or left and right are required by this position.
